About Luis

I'm a software engineer focused on building practical digital products for businesses. I specialize in full-stack web applications, business management systems, POS platforms, M-Pesa integrations and scalable APIs.

I build software solutions and develop quantitative trading models using code, data, and mathematics to solve real-world problems.

I'm also exploring AI, blockchain and Web3 technologies to build the next generation of digital products.

Gold quantitative research notebook showing exploratory market analysis

Gold Quant Research — Logistic Regression

A price- and volatility-featured model predicting the direction of gold's next five-trading-day return. Stage 9 closed with the validation result rejected: the model did not establish a predictive edge over either the always-up baseline or buy-and-hold.

Python pandas scikit-learn Time-series validation Transaction ledger audit
Stage 9 Results & Audit

Research question

Can logistic regression predict the sign of gold's next five-trading-day return well enough to produce a tradable edge over a naive baseline and buy-and-hold?

Method

One logistic regression model, features standardized using training data only, a fixed 0.50 threshold, and no class-imbalance correction. Validation covers 2019–2022. The 2023–2026 test period remains untouched.

57.33%Validation accuracy
57.43%Always-up accuracy
51.79%Balanced accuracy
0.5210ROC-AUC
+36.63%Strategy return, 135 trades
+39.92%Buy-and-hold return

Backtest and controls

Non-overlapping five-trading-day positions entered at Open[t+1] and exited at Open[t+6], with 0.02% transaction costs on entry and exit. The strategy trailed buy-and-hold by 3.29 percentage points. A 20-seed shuffled-target control was chance-level (50.00% balanced accuracy on average), while calibration was non-monotonic.

Ledger verification

All 8 transaction identities passed. Entry and exit costs reconciled to actual notionals at 0.072770611; daily marked-to-market equity matched the invested units on every invested day; compounded trade returns reconciled to final daily equity.

Conclusion: No validation evidence of a tradable predictive edge. The model was rejected. Its positive return mostly reflected gold's upward exposure during the period, and the held-out test data was not used.

Research notebook archive

The photos below document exploratory work in the notebook. They are not the final Stage 9 performance evidence; the audited results above are the final figures.

Audit script

Download the Stage 9 Python audit script. The script expects gold_ml_dataset.csv and gold_daily_full_v2.csv in its working directory; those datasets are not included in this portfolio.
